Mastodon: Show Preview

Wednesday, Nov 2 2011

As one of heavy music's leading lights, prog-metal juggernaut Mastodon has spent over a decade churning out an artful amalgam of quantum-physics guitar riffage and third-eye-opening psychedelia. Having shredded the concept-album envelope with 2009's heady astral-projection-in-czarist-Russia opus Crack the Skye, the band recently unleashed The Hunter, a more traditional collection of songs that should please fans of both its brutal roots (with the explosive opening salvo of "Black Tongue" and "Curl of the Burl") and lysergic tendencies (on the swirling title track and Floyd-esque closer "The Sparrow"). Add in mathcore heroes Dillinger Escape Plan and rising Portland-based metal heathens Red Fang, and you may get one of the best metal shows of the year when Mastodon delivers the fury.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
