Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowout: Show Preview

Wednesday, Jan 8 2014

Mark Hummel's annual harmonica blowout is a celebration of blues harp that's attained an almost legendary status over its 23-year run. The revue's debut performance at SFJAZZ will showcase one of the strongest lineups Hummel's ever put together. The cast includes John Mayall, probably the best harmonica player Britain's ever produced, a reunion of singer and harmonica ace Rick Estrin and guitarist Little Charlie Baty from Little Charlie and the Nightcats, and singer and harp player Curtis Salgado, who is well-known for his incendiary contributions to the bands of Carlos Santana and the Robert Cray. Hummel and his touring band — Bob Welch on guitar and piano, bassist RW Grigsby, and drummer June Core — back up the guests with their usual gritty grooves.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
