Maribou State @ The Independent

Wednesday, Dec 9 2015

Why is the UK so good at producing electronic music? Maribou State, a duo comprised of Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, is yet another specimen of bizarrely talented electronic music impresarios. Their slightly dance-y, slightly eerie jams are, more often than not, coated in a thick layer of analog fuzz that gives their music both texture and complexion. It's the kind of stuff that you could play at a party or while at home alone brooding over your non-existent love life and Netflix's shitty selection. Their latest release (and first album), Portraits, is perhaps their best work yet, and proves that weird, chill-wave electronic music is actually a thing. Or at least it should be.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
