There's nothing like a good pun, especially when that pun denotes a transgressive cultural discussion about multiethnic queer communities. In "Macho Menos," a play on the Spanish phrase "mas o menos (more or less)," Latino queer men repurpose a phrase from their background and use it to color the culture at the foreground. Latino culture imbues a strong sense of machismo in young males, not to mention the genderization written into the language itself (did you know a tree, or arbol, is grammatically male?). This art exhibit explores the multiple identities of the artists, and it shows that all communities — and all individuals — comprise so much more than just one element of an identity.
The "Macho Menos" reception starts at 6 p.m. and the exhibit runs through July 17 at 6 p.m., San Francisco LGBT Community Center, 1800 Market St., S.F. Free; qcc2.org/macho-menos.
