Lord Dying
Lord Dying with Howl, Cormorant, and Hornss. 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Thee Parkside; $10.
Following in the footsteps of fellow Portland hessians Red Fang and Witch Mountain, Lord Dying is the latest in a string of top-notch bands to emerge from the fertile Pacific Northwest scene. What it lacks in Red Fang's indelible hooks and tandem vocal attack the quartet more than makes up for with sheer riff tonnage on the crushing Relapse Records debut Summon the Faithless. Nodding to the muscular fury of early Mastodon and High on Fire, Lord Dying forges an addictive sonic assault around singer/guitarist Erik Olson's vein-busting baritone bellow. The group comes to town supporting Providence headbangers Howl, whose latest Relapse effort Bloodlines has also earned deserved genuflection from metal blogs.
