Let's See Some Hustle Out There!

Wednesday, Jul 2 2008
We have not read local author Jennifer Sey's book Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics' Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders, and Elusive Olympic Dreams. But we did see Stick It, a movie on the same theme whose tagline is "It's not called gym-nice-tics," so we feel like we know what she's talking about. Sey reads at a lineup of writers who feel, um, somewhat ambiguous about the value of competitive exercise; it's called "Fuck Sports." The evening is brought to you by Alan Black, the same guy who brought us the Swearing Festival, and who has just published Kick the Balls: An Offensive Suburban Odyssey. It's about his time as one of those abusive soccer coaches you hear so much about — he's a real peach of a guy. Other writers with poor team spirit include the "poet laureate of NASCAR" Bucky Sinister, former long-jump record-holder Beth Lisick, Incredibly Strange Wrestling maven Count Dante, and son of a sports columnist Eddie Muller.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
