Left Eye Cinema: State of Emergence/Tribulation 99

When: Fri., Jan. 25, 7:30 p.m. 2019
Price: $7-$10
Join the San Francisco Democratic Socialists of America for a found footage double bill, presented by our Immigrants’ Rights and International Solidarity group. State of Emergence (2014) is the ultimate zombie movie—minus the zombies. Produced by the Anti-Banality Union, it taps into the societal paranoia of Hollywood disaster movies in its vision of a world suddenly incapable of sustaining its own contradictions. In response to a nebulous foreign enemy that never materializes, martial law is declared, citizens barricade their doors to keep out their neighbors…and a border wall is built. With startling prescience, State of Emergence details the horrors that ensue when people choose passivity over solidarity. Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America (1991) is the “pseudo-pseudo-documentary” classic by ATA co-founder Craig Baldwin. It presents a factual chronicle of US intervention in Latin America in the form of the ultimate far-right conspiracy theory, combining covert action, environmental catastrophe, space aliens, cattle mutilations, killer bees, religious prophecy, doomsday diatribes, and just about every other crackpot theory broadcast through the dentures of the modern paranoiac. A delirious vortex of hard truths, deadpan irony, and archival mash-ups—industrials, graphs, cartoons, movies from Hollywood B to Mexican Z—Tribulation 99 constructs a truly perverse vision of American imperialism.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
