Lady Cab Fixer

Wednesday, Dec 3 2008
When we were little hippie girls, we wanted to be either a ballerina or a truck driver when we grew up. True story! We had good role models, apparently. (Let's hear it for Free to Be … You and Me.) If you need the possiblities for your own future shaken up, no matter how old you are, check out photographer Sarah Lyon's Female Mechanics Calendar 2009. Racecar, bike, airplane, and diesel-truck mechanic women populate the 14-month calendar. Each page is a little bit like a portrait of a unicorn – a photograph of something you may have dreamed of, but didn't dare believe was real. Our current favorite is Rosie the Riveter lookalike Jessica Dulong of New York City. She's an engineer on the John J. Harvey Historic Fireboat, and in the calendar, her big muscly arms are streaked with black grease. Swoon. Two of the host garage's employees – hybrid mechanics -- are featured as well.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
