Kyuss Lives!
Kyuss Lives! performs with the Sword, Black Cobra, and Papa Wheelie on Saturday, Nov. 19, at The Regency Ballroom. 7 p.m., $28.50 adv./$30 doors.
Kyuss existed for only five years, but the reputation it cultivated in that time was enough to fuel the creation of Kyuss Lives!, a group that features three of the band's four original members. The Palm Desert-bred outfit's grinding guitar music managed to feel both coolly laid-back and pointedly aggressive; along the way, it gained the label "desert rock" because of the "generator parties" the band threw in remote California terrain. Kyuss Lives! maintains a confusing relationship with the notorious Josh Homme, the only original member absent: Singer John Garcia berated and hung up on an interviewer after Garcia felt he was being urged to insult Homme, whom he respects, while a recent KL! press release touts the trio as "the only ones entitled to play the real shit."
