(The team behind KoKo's looking to open the Hi Lo Lounge in late 2011 at 1423 Polk at Pine, after KoKo's July 30 close.)
Tucked between busy Van Ness Boulevard and the Polk Gulch/Tenderloin boundary zone, KoKo is tiny in size but rising fast in scene appreciation. New owners (as of early 2008) removed the old pool table to make room for dancing while DJs play everything from vintage soul, hip-hop, and reggae to Brazilian beats, art-rock, and mutant disco. It doesn't take much to make this dark, intimate space feel crowded - providing a casual intimacy that you won't find in fancier, trendier rooms.
