Jayinee Basu's writing reflects her varied background. After finishing a double major in creative writing and political science at UC San Diego, she applied to and decided against attending law school, found herself in the Mission, and now writes interactive courses for the prevention of sexual violence. Basu is also a volunteer research assistant at UC San Francisco, where she helps examine neural network functions and frontotemporal dementia, and she is finishing a premed program at UC Berkeley. Inspired by the accessibility and playfulness of alt lit, Basu started submitting to journals and doing a few readings around town. A sense of immediate expression, as you might find on social media or via text messaging, serves as the vehicle for her thoughts; each piece of writing is a demonstration of the mind at work, and her informal language brings the profound to a popular audience. To celebrate the publication of her first book, Asuras, she's hosting a party with a reading and music by Healing Potpourri. She encourages you to dress nicely.
The party starts at 6 p.m. at Press: Works on Paper, 3108 24th St., S.F. Free; 415-913-7156 or visit facebook.com/events/791650047621230.
