Despite projections of 5,000 skateboarders showing up at "Wild in the Streets" 2007 for a crazy 4th of July ride from Embarcadero to 3rd and Army, the crowd was enthusiastic but... thin. No more than
100 by the official start time.

As expected, people in patriotic brown blanketed Dolores Park yesterday in numbers we haven't seen since, well, last weekend. Although the photos hardly do it justice -- to do that, you need the smell of independence weed and someone asking if you're registered to vote in California every five minutes. For added fun, count the American flags. (Hint: There aren't any.)

Last night, dutifully ascending to the roof to see if our continually transforming downtown skyline would prevent us from getting a good look at either one of the dual firework shows over Pier 39 (it did), we were reminded once again, in the form of a beautiful exploding flower.
