Discomfited teenagers have been belting out fiery rock tunes for generations. But there is something very novel about Iceage. The Danish punk quartet first drew attention in January, when its album New Brigade saw a limited release in Scandinavia. But the band had been recording for months before that: the psychedelic lo-fi workout "Collaps" was one of 2009's greatest, fiercest tracks. Led by vocalist Elias Bender, Iceage is brutally immersive. New Brigade isn't tied to any particular concept, but it plays like the unfolding soundtrack to an anarchic dystopia. Highlights include "White Rune," which hangs heavy with claustrophobic dread and paranoia.
