How Grassroots Politics Transformed Former Company Town Richmond, CA

When: Thu., July 6, 7-8:30 p.m. 2017
Price: Free
Richmond, California was once a prototypical company town dominated by Chevron Corporation and its massive refinery, suffering from poverty, pollution, poorly funded public services and high homicide rates. Steve Early will discuss his new book Refinery Town: Big Oil, Big Money, and the Remaking of an American City which chronicles fifteen years of successful community organizing that raised the local minimum wage, defeated a casino development project, challenged home foreclosures and evictions, and sought fair taxation of Big Oil and Big Soda. The book shows how concerned citizens can harness the power of local politics to reclaim their community.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
