Dark, grotesque bodies twisted up in emotional turmoil as they leak vapors that cloud the definition of their features, figures pierced through by gargantuan thorns, faceless people confined in cages of wire, the pope screaming. Though dance celebrates the strength and beauty of the human body, the terrifying forms in 20th-century painter Francis Bacon's art inspire choreographer Hope Mohr's newest work for five dancers, Stay. In the piece, Mohr explores the relationship between the alienation of abstraction and the emotional connections that can nevertheless be found in such a context. Also premiering in Hope Mohr Dance's spring season is The Material of Attention, a collaboration between Mohr and Christian Burns that draws on improvisatory practices to create a work that hovers "between chaos and order, craft and surprise."
Hope Mohr Dance presents its spring season at 8 p.m. through May 31 at ODC Theater, 3153 17th St., S.F. $20-$45; hopemohr.org.
