Scott Rosenberg
The first time I saw Scott Rosenberg he was crawling under tables and knocking around bottles on the floor of Radio Valencia Cafe while an ad hoc group of his peers attempted to integrate unusual sound combinations into his mischievous clatter. That show marked one of Rosenberg's earliest gatherings of young-blood improvisers and set the stage for more ambitious projects like the 40-piece Free-Standing Orchestra, which skillfully fused standard instrumentation (strings, brass) with an "interactive" audience.

The 24-year-old composer/multireed player has billed Wednesday's presentation as "A Smorgasbord of Improvisation" with good reason. The event will showcase nearly three dozen local musicians, in a variety of configurations, and feature some of the scene's mightiest up-and-comers (Ashley Adams, Matt Ingalls, Brian Kane) alongside a smattering of seasoned "elders" (Dan Plonsey, Graham Connah). The concert intends to juxtapose a virtual smorgasbord of self-described "acoustic and electric, orchestral and non-European, homemade and found instruments of every type."

The show is also Rosenberg's farewell to San Francisco before trying out his chops in NYC for a few months, and then sojourning in Europe to see if the Continent's fantasy-land rep holds true for jazz hopefuls in 1997. While the artist's own improvs sometimes lack the full-throttle development of more dangerous players, his dedication to provocation and scene solidarity places him at the forefront of the current wave. And that willingness to pull together and push beyond will be sorely missed in the months to come.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
