Going Batty

Wednesday, Jul 25 2007
Britain sure has been giving us some kooky young singers lately, such as tabloid favorites Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse, who teeter on the verge of sane behavior. We've heard of no such shenanigans so far from Bat for Lashes (aka Natasha Khan), but there's another reason why this vocalist and multi-instrumentalist (most notably on piano and harpsichord) might actually still be around in 10 years: She does an amazing cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire," which shows the Boss who's really in charge. Her smoldering looks and unconventional approach have garnered comparisons with other leftfield ladies such as Kate Bush, Cat Power, and Joanna Newsom. People liken her to Björk as well, which isn't quite as fair a comparison as the others. But Björk has mentioned that she enjoys seeing Bat for Lashes live, so it's not entirely barking up the wrong tree, either.

Decide for yourself who, if anyone, Bat for Lashes sounds like.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
