Girls, Ladies, Women, and Laughs

Wednesday, Feb 23 2011
Emily Heller and Janine Brito are the same, but different. They're both girls. (Bear with us for minute.) They both do standup comedy. But there they diverge. Among Heller's acts is being part of musical group Rainbow Chair, in which she and her identical twin brother sing lovey-dovey, touchy-feely, tie-dyed, macrame songs about getting to know one another in the womb. And then there's Brito, who takes a darker route to laughs by recalling the fierce (and very short) bedtime stories told by her schizophrenic nanny (who, we think, was from Hungary or Czech Republic or Armenia or something, based on her accent). We once called Brito a mean lesbian, but we think she knows we meant it in a good way. Tonight the two host Janine + Emily's Girl Talk, which they describe as “a night of unladylike comedy.” Included are local laugh-generators Caitlin Gill, Marcella Arguello, and Chris Burns, as well as Chicagoan Beth Stelling and Angelina Aparna Nancherla. Brito and Heller remind us that March is Women's History Month and today is International Women's Day, so you have absolutely no excuse to miss this. “Unless, of course, you hate women.” You've been warned.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
