Girl in a Coma: Show Preview

Wednesday, Nov 23 2011

Smart" is the fourth track on Girl in a Coma's new album, Exits and All the Rest, but it's the first time the record feels like it was made by a band practically named after a Smiths song. Before that, this all-female trio from San Antonio spits brash, pissed-off blues-punk: simple, melodic, and with plenty of rough edges backing the gorgeous taunts of singer Nina Diaz. But Diaz really shines on "Smart" — the song is all smooth distance and breezy melancholy. It's such a well-done tribute to the band's clear influence that it's easy to see why Morrissey himself has picked Girl in a Coma to open past tours.

Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
