Geto Boys at The New Parish

Houston's Geto Boys came into the spotlight after their self-titled record on Rick Rubin's boutique label, American Recordings, hit record shelves in 1990. It was songs like "Mind of a Lunatic" which struck a major chord in the gangsta rap community and effectively created a sub-genre of horror rap. And while the band's output before and after their breakthrough has been hit and miss (to put it nicely), core members Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill are still putting out records and making the rounds on the touring circuit. It was the shock-value of lyrics like "I'll blow your motherfuckin' house up and if your wife and kids are inside they're fucked!" that helped the group make a name for itself as habitual line-steppers, eager to rap about anything from misogyny to necrophilia. Tracks like "Chuckie" are so outrageous they're impossible to take seriously — unless you do — and then they're scary and offensive as all hell.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
