One Love Bake Sale
By John Birdsall
Valentine's Day can feel depressingly shrinkwrapped. If you're in a relationship, you don't need sweatshop roses or a Twilight box set to tell your boyfriend that you love him, or ask forgiveness from your wife for being a dick. And if you're not with somebody, the need to land a date can fill you with the kind of desperation that rules in cougar land.
It's time for a rethink. It's time for One Love.
On Sunday, Feb. 13, SFWeekly's food blog, SFoodie, is throwing its first-ever benefit, a bake sale called One Love. Instead of blowing the bank on some stilted play for romance, be good to yourself. Head on over to La Victoria from noon to 4 p.m. and pick up a collection of baked goods from some of SFoodie's favorite pastry shops (see below). They're donating treats suitable for celebrating the fact that, whether you know it or not, you are your own best Valentine. Munch at La Victoria with a cup of the house De La Paz coffee, or pack treats up to go.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, 100 percent of all sales will go to the San Francisco City Clinic, which provides free or low-cost sexual and reproductive health services to everyone — rich, poor, LGBT, straight, no questions asked. Because, in the words of Drag Race diva RuPaul, "If you can't love yourself, how the hell are you gonna love somebody else?"
Can we get an "Amen" up in here?
When: Sunday, Feb. 13, noon-4 p.m.
Where: La Victoria Mexican Bakery and Cafe, 2937 24th St. (at Alabama); bake sale is cash only
Partial list of bakeries: Goody Goodie, Tell Tale Preserve Co., Mission Minis, Sweet Adeline Bakeshop, Pinkie's Bakery, Sandbox Bakery, Knead Patisserie, Baker and Banker Bakery.
