For the Ladies

Wednesday, Jul 30 2008
In the face of Sex and the City, the waxing epidemic, women's magazines, men's magazines, and myriad other assaults on a normal woman's sanity, playwright Milta Ortiz presents Scatter My Red Underwear: The Goddess Remix. Using a fast-paced and smart-mouthed mix of live and recorded elements, Ortiz, Scarlett Abuslin, and Aryah Shell are directed by Marc David Pinate in sketches like "Girl Talk on TV," in which the hostess says the show's a show "Because reading is so, ugh, yesterday." From under a blonde wig, her voice rises steadily to a hysterical squeak as she declares: "If you are not beautiful, you are nothing. Because after all, you must be the hottest woman in the room, the car, the bus, the BART, the office, the store, the classroom, the gym, the spa, the coffee shop, the restaurant, the club, the theater, the bar, the house, the apartment … " The show's concept draws from the spoken word movement, but is thoroughly multi and post-everything, except feminism. "Never leave the house unless you are a walking magazine cover!" screeches GToTV's hostess, and that's a feminist analysis if ever we heard one.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
