Folk Sounds Like Fuck

Wednesday, Oct 1 2008
Once upon a time, folk and folk-rock were played on mainstream radio. Try to imagine Live 105 playing Joni Mitchell. Yeah right! That could never happen now, because it would be very threatening to someone's penis. But back in the 1960s and '70s, obviously, radio station executives had larger dongs and weren't worried about it. They played Donovan, Simon & Garfunkel, Judy Collins, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. One thing music fans didn't have back then was YouTube, bummer, but they had this other weird thing called "film." Famously astute rock critic Richie Unterberger owns a bunch of clips of folkies performing, even Leonard Cohen, and he screens them this evening at one of his popular library film nights.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
