Few things in music these days are more alluring than the videos of
FKA twigs (aka Tahliah Barnett). The English singer, whose alias partially stems from a nickname concerning the way her bones crack, has assembled a handful of majestic, painstakingly stylized clips. In "Two Weeks," she's a queen carefully dancing in a sandy-hued, ancient Egypt-style setting. Set against a green background, "Water Me" features a tight closeup on her well-lit, strikingly decorated head as she sings. In "Papi Pacify," Barnett engages in some kind of simulated sex/dance with a man, with the whole scene shot in stark black and white. All the while, the visuals are matched with measured, haunting, trippy contemporary R&B — think the Weeknd and The xx, and to a lesser degree, Grimes or Baths — that makes sex and love feel like truly escapist pursuits. FKA twigs' love for simplicity and sleekness also resonates in her choice of title for her brand-new debut album:
