Find Your Festival: Lightning In A Bottle

Wednesday, Mar 2 2016

Have you ever wanted to go to a TED Talk on acid or molly? Did you go to Outside Lands last year and think, "Man, this food is great, but I wish I could take nutritional classes instead of seeing bands?" Do you hate Interstate 5 so much that you didn't want to make the trek to Coachella? Have you been to Sasquatch and complained, "This whole Gorge backdrop is pretty cool, but I'd rather see a DJ in a tree instead"?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then Lightning in a Bottle is for you!

Located down Highway 101 near Paso Robles, in Bradley, Calif., Lightning in a Bottle prides itself on being more than just a music festival — it's an entire experience. Put on by Do LaB, which also has its own stage-slash-water-gun-shooting-range at Coachella, the festival started as a private birthday party in 2000 and has since grown into a multistage public event, with acts ranging from Pitchfork darlings Grimes and Jamie xx to electronica hero Four Tet to Aussie headliner and Father John Misty doppelgänger Chet Faker. If you go, expect a combination of Burners and Coachella bros, not to mention lots of flower wreaths, decorative parasols, and bra tops made with innovative items. (Watermelon husk bikinis, anyone?)

In the spirit of the big SoCal music festival that shall not be named — hint: You just read about it on a previous page — camping is a must. But here, you can have campfires! I mean, who wouldn't want to make s'mores at a music festival?!

The festival is also known for what it calls the Temple of Consciousness, described on its website as "a haven of inspiration featuring world-renowned visionaries, wisdom keepers, master teachers, healers, activists, performers, and musicians." This year, the Temple features a DJ set from headliner Chet Faker, yoga, and workshops covering intimacy and sexuality. Sounds like Burning Man minus the random dust storms to me!*

*There may still be random dust storms.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
