Arguably America's biggest music festival, Coachella truly offers everything that a festival goer could ever want, dream, or desire. Started in 1999, this year's event offers the headlining trio of Calvin Harris — better known as Taylor Swift's boyfriend — Brooklyn indie-rock heroes LCD Soundsystem, and the old-as-fuck, always-an-hour-or-two-late hair metal legends Guns N' Roses, who will likely draw one of the weirdest combinations of people in the festival's history. If you want to go to a festival to see tens of thousands of twentysomethings sing "Sweet Child O' Mine" — a song that they most likely learned by playing Guitar Hero or watching Adam Scott and Kathryn Hahn sing it a capella in Step Brothers — Coachella is the festival for you!
If you go, be sure to camp; it will be the grossest, smelliest, most overcrowded decision you'll ever make. And though you may reconsider the idea when you're in a 45-minute line for a bathroom that looks like it should be in ISIS-controlled Syria, camping truly takes the Coachella experience to a different level. I mean, who doesn't want to be cross-faded as hell in a weird makeshift tent made of your neighbor's tarps at 5 a.m. with your new best friends, after standing in 105-degree heat all day?
Yes, there will be insensitive shirtless bros wearing Native American headdresses. Yes, there will be sorority "woo!" girls who will make it impossible for you to get a good spot to cry when LCD Soundsystem plays "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down" because Ellie Goulding is playing the main stage right before them. But when push comes to shove, Sufjan Stevens is going to play as the sun sets in the desert on Friday night. Although your feet may be bruised from standing all day and your entire body already peeling from the future skin cancer you racked up from being in the sun for 12 hours, it will be the most beautiful moment of your entire year. Do you really want to miss that?
