For the last quarter-century, "2015 in cinema" meant comical comparisons with Back to the Future Part II's hoverboards and Jaws holograms. Now that the year is largely behind us, 2015 looks almost like one long, snowballing series of The Force Awakens trailers, culminating in the release of the highest-grossing movie of all time, and the sourness of an internet riddled with spoilers.
Star Wars sucks the oxygen out of the room the way Donald Trump does — but unlike the rest of the GOP primary clown car, 2015 saw the release of a number of notable films in all genres. Be they the shot-on-an-iPhone exploits of transgender prostitutes in L.A., monster-truck battles in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, or sushi joints in Oakland, this year proved that Amazon Prime hasn't displaced the big screen yet.
And anyway, we got our damn hoverboards, too.
