Flamenco, dance of passion and resistance, has its origins in southern Spain, blending Andalusian and Romani dance with the Spanish seguidilla, emerging at about the same time as the Spanish settlement of California. Celebrated dancer Carolina Lugo, who has performed and choreographed nationally and internationally since the age of 14, brings the company of musicians and dancers she directs with her daughter, Carolé Acuña, to the intimate setting of former North Beach speakeasy Peña Pachamama. With Ballet Flamenco, they preserve a long history of Spanish culture in their traditional choreography, performed to the plaintive melodies of guitar and voice.
