This city is full of discerning scenesters, artsy weirdos, and erudite culture mavens, each of them with a different opinion about how to spend one's free time. Maybe the only thing that'll get you out of the house this fall is a Prokofiev-scored Russian ballet, or maybe the idea of crisscrossing the Bay multiple times for fetish-themed events on the weekend of the Folsom Street Fair sounds like the best weekend ever. Or maybe you just want a peek at what's debuting on Netflix right around the time El Niño makes homebodies of us all. If you're reading this Fall Arts issue, there's a solid chance you're not doing so while waiting for an art car ride-share to pick you up on the playa. But no matter where you are or what you're into, there's something in here that will make you grateful to live in or near San Francisco. For all the night terrors S.F.'s artists and performers have about venues vanishing, the cost of living going up, and brilliant minds moving away, the scene remains as vital as ever.
