Summer has come and gone, but for many city-dwellers it feels as though we hardly had time to catch our breath, let alone get away for a while. Looking for an escape that's somewhere in between that bar on your block and a weeklong trip to Hawaii? San Francisco is a town of many tricks — you don't have to look far to get weird this fall.
Local group Red Hots Burlesque presents Go Deep: Queer Ladies Lube Wrestling. The event, created for lesbians, by lesbians, is hosted by SOMA's Supperclub and includes supper (naturally) and performances by the Red Hots Burlesque Dancers (Sept. 4, redhotsburlesque.com). Is lube wrestling your idea of heaven? Or does all that exposed skin make you blush? Either way, check out Z Space's Arguendo (Oct. 27-Nov. 2, zspace.org), a show based on a real-life U.S. Supreme Court case from the early 1990s that asks the question: Is nude dancing a true art form, or is it an unethical practice?
DNA Lounge offers Terminator Too: Judgment Play (Sept. 5-Dec. 5, dnalounge.com), a modern take on the 1991 classic, Terminator 2. This version features over-the-top action, Facebook drama, and a new performer selected from the audience for each show to play Arnold Schwarzenegger's title role — so if you're a man taking someone out on a first date, approach with caution.
A safer option to look cool on a first date? The 15th Annual San Francisco Decompression Heat the Street Faire (Oct. 12, burningman.com). Because let's be honest, you won't be the weirdest person there.
What better way to escape the day-to-day than by running off to join the circus? For those of us who don't think juggling knives or breathing fire is the kind of trick we see ourselves picking up, we'll settle for spending a few hours at the circus instead. The world-famous Cirque du Soleil makes its way to the city for its new production of Kurios, and will set up shop under the big top at AT&T Park (Nov. 14-Dec. 31, cirquedusoleil.com).
