Fall Arts 2014: Comedy: Sample the Many Ways Things Can Be Funny to You, You Weirdo

The best thing about comedy is it can include anything that's funny. If you laugh at the opera, then the opera counts as comedy. If sad animals make you giggle, then get tickets to the circus: comedy. Or maybe you think a grown man, screaming, dressed as a very tall clown is hilarious: That's comedy. Specifically it sounds like Tim and Eric, who, along with Dr. Steve Brule (of Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule), will be in town for a stop on their live tour (Sept. 11). See how their crazily edited small-screen show translates to a live performance.

The day after Tim and Eric is the Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival, featuring the standup of Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, Chris Hardwick, Demetri Martin, and even more than that (Sept. 12). If you don't mind getting yourself out to Mountain View to the steep outdoor amphitheater near Google (keep in mind if you work at Google you could just walk or scooter to the amphitheater from work), it's a one-of-a-kind comedy festival with a strong lineup and two stages. Later this month, the storytelling show Risk!, hosted by The State's Kevin Allison, will be at the Verdi Club for a night of true stories told by writers, actors, comedians, and others, based on the theme "Trigger Warning" (Sept. 18).

Comedy musicians, and now television personalities, Garfunkel & Oates will play at Cobb's Comedy Club (Sept. 27), for two shows that are allegedly "Monster Energy Presents," and it's honestly hard to tell whether that is a joke or not. So maybe that means it is? Or, do you think Girls is funny? Lena Dunham, who has a new book out, is coming to The Nourse for a conversation with the Bay Area's own Vendela Vida (Oct. 1). And Maria Bamford is scheduled to perform at Cobb's (Oct. 28 and 29), and she is really fantastic, in many ways a comedy outsider (who can do a beautiful pterodactyl impression).

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
