Fair’s Fair

Wednesday, May 20 2009
Anyone with a rural upbringing can tell you: The only thing wrong with traditional Amurican county fairs is that they’re not openly gay enough. Read: County fairs can be hazardous to the out gay, yet they’re inherently super gay on account of all the gays you’ll find there. Pretty much like the rest of the world! To partially compensate, try the “County Fair.” With its shooting gallery, pie contest, and Queen of the Fair Pageant, this benefit for the AIDS Emergency Fund is satisfyingly authentic -- and yet better. Leather community? Welcome. Rednecks of color? Welcome. Drag performers looking to rip the tiara out of the pageant winner’s wig? Welcome, welcome, welcome. Unabashedly tough cowgirls, a George Bush shoe toss, and Mr. International Gay Rodeo ’04 are unique to this fair, but some things remain constant in the translation from uptight to out ‘n’ proud -- fried food, plenty of hooch, and serious competition for blue ribbons.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
