Go Color In a Bag of Dicks! (With This Totally NSFW Coloring Book)

Sometimes, after a bad breakup, you just have to have sex with as many people as possible until you stop feeling like shit about yourself.

But if you're artist Nathan Rapport, a onetime San Franciscan who now lives and works in Austin, you get in the car after meeting up with a trick and Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" and you realize that maybe that method isn't working this time. 

"I don't want to demonize it," Rapport says of the promiscuity route. "But it's also worth asking questions. It didn't make much sense to me, fucking your way through a breakup. Of course, we all do this, whether we're gay or straight." 

Instead, he poured his feelings into his art, to make sense of the breakup and — as he put it — the "slutty phase."

"I created a single drawing, and it felt like it was a page of a coloring book," he says, and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me was born.

Fighting for the Soul of the Republic, in the S.F. Mime Troupe's Schooled

Move over, Common Core. Babbittry is the dogma at the former Eleanor Roosevelt Academy once it becomes the Learning Academy of Virtual Achievement (or LAVA) in the San Francisco Mime Troupe's production of Schooled. With encomiums to "make American schools great ... again," it's immediately clear who this burst of social commentary has aimed its arrows at.

And when a frustrated veteran educator, fed up with slick technological improvements, despairs of what is to become of good-old-fashioned civics — "There is no app for citizenship!" — as a professional woman of color who's the mother of a struggling student gets caught between her hard-nosed ambition and the idealism still burning within her, the play becomes more than an indictment of no-nothingism. Like John Barth's 1996 novel Giles, Goat-Boy, a metafictional farce that's essentially one long pun on universe/university, Michael Gene Sullivan and Eugenie Chan's script about the transformation of Eleanor Roosevelt into LAVA (and later the Babbit Academy) echoes the dire implications of the world around it.

When he started working as an IT consultant, Sanjay Manaktala traveled a lot. He would find himself in Iowa or Wisconsin, and  bored in the hotel, he would head out to perform at comedy clubs.

This isn’t something that everyone might do when they find themselves in a strange city with some free time. But Manaktala has loved comedy since he was a teenager. Needing just one more CD to complete the offer of 10-for-a-dollar, he ended up with the cool-looking guy in a tux. That was Chris Rock, and it was the only CD he ended up listening to.

In 1995 cult flick Showgirls, Vegas stripper Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) dreams of kicking off her hooker heels and thrusting her way into a major burlesque revue. With Showgirls! The Musical!, starring April Kidwell as the exotic dancer turned showgirl, Peaches Christ, who plays Nomi's nemesis Cristal Connors and also directs, realizes her own ambition of bringing a full-length stage show to San Francisco.

In anticipation of Showgirls! The Musical!'s west coast premiere on August 10, Peaches Christ spoke to SF Weekly about making the show her own, why the film that it's based on continues to titillate and why her new ice cream flavor is more mouthwatering than an iced nipple.

The Biggest Cuteasses of Outside Lands 2016

Music festivals have a particular style. Granted, Outside Lands is not Coachella, where the golden hour reflecting off the mountains makes everyone look stunning, and they're all excited because it's April and they can show off the tattoos that have been hibernating all winter (and the place is full of Angeleno fashionistas, besides).

It's not even close, actually. Although the fog burned off for so much of Sunday afternoon that Golden Gate Park came damn near close to experiencing a proper sunset, it's been a relentlessly cold summer and people seemed to dress accordingly. Comfort and good sense ruled the day, every day, and many of the cliches of years past seemed to have fallen by the wayside. Yes, there was a fair amount of Bernie paraphernalia and Jill Stein-branded apparel, but I don't think I spotted a single Keep Calm and Chive On shirt.

Although we would shame brazen cultural appropriation — like feathered war bonnets or nón lás (those Vietnamese conical hats) — we're delighted to report that we saw a grand total of zero offenders in either category all weekend. (We did spot a Reagan-Bush '84 T-shirt at the Panhandle Stage, but that was probably ironic.)

Plus, shaming isn't really that much fun. It's way better to draw attention to people who put a little effort into looking good in a frequently inhospitable climate, so here are some of our favorites.

Director and comedian Mike Birbiglia is fucking pissed at Hollywood.

His Sleepwalk With Me follow-up, Don't Think Twice, about a group of six improv performers struggling to make it in New York City, happens to come out the same weekend as Suicide Squad, which is about a half-dozen criminals working to save the world.  If the latter, with its bigger budget, stars, and promotional push, doesn't already have an unfair advantage over the second-time director's sleeper film, the violent action flick got another leg up with a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. On the other hand, the relatively tame Don't Think Twice, was rated R, further limiting its box office.

City of Angels: Film Noir Musical Comedy at SF Playhouse

A quartet starts the show by scatting in harmony. Nonsense “ba da da das” spill out of their mouths in unison. What starts as an ode to the Manhattan Transfer crescendos into a vocal evocation of a film noir symphonic prologue. We’re about to enter L.A. county circa 1948. Our companions are a few femme fatales and the strong, square jawline of a private detective named Stone. And a screenwriter named Stine.

It turns out that Stine, not Stone, is the author of this story, or, more accurately, this screenplay. Stone is Stine’s invention: he’s working for a Hollywood producer, finishing the screenplay in real time as the play unfolds in front of us. The musical employs all the dead tropes from an exhausted genre only to transform them into jazz-inflected scenes of ever-increasing farce. City of Angels is every film noir you’ve ever seen but infused with high-octane shots of cheekiness and song.

All the Human Animals at The West Edge Festival 2016

Opera is all emotion and no logic. The opening weekend of The West Edge Festival was an excellent reminder of that fact. Over the course of two weeks, West Edge Opera is staging three operas in an abandoned train station in West Oakland. This is the Festival’s second year at the 16th Street Station. Closed for the past 22 years, the 1912 building is a monument to a lost era.

As the lights dim before the performances, the space is primed to transport the imagination. Most of the audience sits on folding chairs in the middle of the hall. One long row of wooden pews serves as a comfortable back row. But like that scene in The Rolling Stones’ video “Waiting on a Friend,” some people sat on the sidelines, upon cool cement steps leading up to closed off and darkened corridors that are no longer in use.

Soundwave Biennial’s Audiobus Explores The Tenderloin In Its Own Voice

San Francisco in the 21st century is experiencing the tumbleweed-silent steel buildings canyon of the Financial District transition into the always-lively cacophony of the badlands of The Tenderloin.

“The Tenderloin is an area that a lot of people ignore because of it’s reputation as kind of crime ridden,” says Kevin Corcoran, a sound artist living and working in the city, “but I think it warrants at least walking around in The Tenderloin and looking, and hearing, what kind of community exists there.”

What does exist there is a vibrant, poverty stricken, constantly underserved by the city government, section of San Francisco, a place where many new immigrants find themselves, a place where gays, lesbians, and transgender people once found refuge from bigotry, and a place where the most historic buildings in the city are still standing, and still very much in use.

At the ground floor of The Cadillac Hotel, one of those old historic Tenderloin buildings, lies The Tenderloin Museum, a museum that chronicles the history and character of the neighborhood of The Tenderloin. In collaboration with the ongoing Soundwave Biennial series of audio arts projects and exhibitions going on throughout the city until September, the Tenderloin Museum has created, with sound artists Kevin Corcoran and Jen Boyd, an audio collage of the residents of The Tenderloin, mixed with the ambient sounds of the neighborhood itself, that will serve as a soundtrack, performed live by Kevin and Jen, for a bus tour of the neighborhood on July 31st called “Audiobus - Energized Vectors.”

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
