Examine Your ZIFFer

Wednesday, Jul 30 2008
The flyer for the Zeitgeist International Film Festival says "Celebrating cool films and warm beer." The truth is, everything at the ZIFF is likely to be cool, from independent movies to audience fashion to the brew to your butt (if you don't bring a good coat). The festival is held in the backyard "bier garden" of the massively popular bar, so expect ankle-deep gravel, communal seating arrangements, and plenty of smoking opportunities. The films are "screened in beer-o-scope," which means "projected on a concrete wall painted white specially for the occasion." The work comes in from around the world, and selections range from animations with pee- and poo-level humor to documentaries on local celebrities: One favorite from a few years ago was a film entirely dedicated to the Tamale Lady.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
