Tales of Wales
Shift your holiday sentimentality receptors into high-tolerance mode and enjoy: Poet Dylan Thomas’s popular
A Child’s Christmas in Wales is the subject of a reading and discussion, conducted by
Dulais Rhys, who is billed as a real, live Welshman. The work of prose, recorded for radio by Thomas in 1952 and published in book format later in that decade, is a warm, romantic, memory collage featuring anecdotes, adventures, and family mini-dramas (“I made a snowman and my brother knocked it down and I knocked my brother down and then we had tea”). Rhys, a musician who’s interested in vocal patterns, will read from and recreate Thomas’ work, playing audio of Thomas’ reading voice to demonstrate its appeal. A slideshow about the poet’s life and work, too, is on the bill, along with a five-minute Welsh-language lesson.
