Doomtree: Show Preview

Arguably the most literate fringe collective currently operating in the hip-hop underground, Minneapolis-based group Doomtree first coalesced around fiery MC and musician P.O.S. in 2001. Aimed of subverting the kind of dim-witted, chart-topping anthems produced by mainstream rappers, the seven-person crew is united by a love for soul-baring lyricism and an open embrace of eclectic influences ranging from punk to folk to jazz.

Though P.O.S. and fellow MCs Dessa and Sims stay busy with their successful solo careers (Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, and producers Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger round out the group), the group still regularly reconvenes Voltron-like to record new material and tour the U.S. The members of Doomtree mix tongue-twisting tunes from their respective albums alongside burners from the collective's latest effort, All Hands, when their tour with support from Busdriver, Open Mike Eagle, and Transit lands at Slim's tonight.

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
