Docs by the Bay

While Hollywood movies are often formulaic and dumb, documentary cinema is experiencing a golden age. Celebrating this trend, the San Francisco Film Society presents Doc Stories, a four-day festival featuring some of the year’s best nonfiction fare. On the bill is Song of Lahore, a film that details efforts to preserve endangered forms of Pakistani music. Winter on Fire documents the Ukrainian uprising that led to President Viktor Yanukovych’s exit. Cartel Land examines the impact that the drug wars and related vigilantism have on everyday lives, while Laurie Anderson’s Heart of a Dog is a marvelously unconventional essay centering on the filmmaker-musician’s rat terrier. Short-film presentations include New York Times Op-Docs and Profiles in Courage: Short Documentaries from HBO. Most programs will feature Q&As with special guests.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
