DJ Zeph

Sunset Scavenger

Wednesday, Aug 25 2004
Much like this album's recycling company namesake, San Francisco party DJ-turned-producer Zeph picks through sonic leftovers to create something fresh and new on his second LP, for which he invited a posse of the bay's finest MCs to lend a hand. With sharpened production skills, Zeph provides a funky backdrop for various styles of flow, be it Boots Riley's slow-ass drawl on "Shake It Down" or Lyrics Born's frantic party-call on "Hands Up." Dance-floor jams like "Floorwax" featuring MC Raashan Ahmad complement the mellower tunes such as the spoken-word-infused "Cormorant." Much in the same vein of 2001's DJ Zeph, Sunset Scavenger is a blend of jazzy instrumentals and uptempo vocal tracks, a continuous party mix that ranges from above average to stunning. Here's to continued digging in the dumpsters.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
