Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode with Crystal Castles. 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at Shoreline Amphitheatre. $47-$635; livenation.com.
Like pumpkin-spice lattes and questionable flavors of Oreos (candy corn, we're looking at you), a Depeche Mode tour brings a feeling of old-fashioned but newfangled comfort. Expect modern LCD walls backing familiar sexual brooding and electro-blues, as The Boys from Basildon (Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher) have been reviving gospel sleaze and absolving gloom while proselytizing to the converted for three decades. But then we just can't get enough plinky synth-pop, baritone salvation, or a surprisingly spry 51-year-old frontman taking his microphone stand for a twirl. Synced to its own metronome, Depeche Mode remains pleasingly out of step with any trend save for delivering songs of faith and devotion. Watch Gahan rock a vest with no shirt, Gore wear something vaguely S&M, and Fletcher stand sentry as they bring 2013's new album Delta Machine to the Bay Area this week.
