Just about everyone has a few things from childhood they would prefer stay hidden. Ours is a short story about a mysterious blob that eats school children. It was written in Mrs. Knecht's sixth-grade English class, and is full of the hideous phrasing and gratuitous grossness that only a young boy can muster. Thankfully, this travesty of storytelling is safely boxed up, gathering dust in an undisclosed location. The idea of reading it on stage fills us with a paralyzing dread. We would be, to put it mildly, mortified. Which is exactly what the folks behind the reading series Mortified have in mind. The show brings a rotating cast of entertainers to read from diaries, poems, and songs created during their formative years. The format might sound scary, but the series has been wildly successful. Newsweek called it a "cultural phenomenon," and Mortified counts the creators of This American Life, The Onion AV Club, and Entertainment Weekly among its fans.
