To the old guard, David F. Walker might seem an unlikely speaker for "Celebrating the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King." At a glance, he has more in common with Quentin Tarantino, with whom he has worked, than with the 18th-century activist/abolitionist with whom he shares a name. But, as founder of the long-running zine-turned-blog BadAzz MoFo, producer of the documentary Macked, Hammered, Slaughtered, & Shafted, and co-author of Reflections on Blaxploitation, Walker is recognized as an expert in black cinema and the history of our nation. It is no surprise, then, that Walker turned heads, raised hackles, and won awards at Portland's Willamette Week, or that the young black heroes in his comic books and YA novels are worth their weight in cash and conscience. Prepare for a lively conversation before Martin Luther King Jr. Day that will no doubt begin with the race films of the early 1900s and end with Walker's vision for a new wave of blaxploitation.
