Curating Participation: A Public Dialogue

When: Wed., Sept. 20, 12 p.m. 2017
bampfa.org/event/curating-participation-public-dialogue-kelly-mckinley-laura-e-p%C3%A9rez-and-peter-samis
In this public dialogue, we explore how museums and other arts organizations are responding to the call for participation in our current moment by placing the visitor at the center of the museum experience. How does the “participatory turn” change the role of the curator? How does participation change the divisions of labor within the organization itself? When does participation deepen the experience of a visitor and when does it create new distractions? Considering these questions are Kelly McKinley, of the Oakland Museum of California; UC Berkeley professor Laura E. Pérez; and Peter Samis, of the San Francisco MOMA

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
