Concert preview: Unnatural Helpers

Wednesday, May 12 2010

There's an instant charm to Unnatural Helpers' one- and two-minute songs. Cramming 15 of them onto the Seattle group's latest release, the 25-minute Cracked Love & Other Drugs, drummer and frontman Dean Whitmore spouts funny, juvenile lyrics over the band's distorted rock. In a nifty reversal, "Sunshine/Pretty Girls" is actually a cataloguing of things he doesn't care about, while "She Was Your Girlfriend" isn't very remorseful about an extrarelationship tryst. Formerly of the Intelligence and a few other bands, Whitmore has armed himself with a bracing lineup, and an ideal producer in the Fastbacks' Kurt Bloch. From there, the songs practically write themselves.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
