Equipped with a sultry voice merging raw anguish and assured elegance, Alabaman Shelby Lynne is a performer who transcends stylistic classification. She began her career in mainstream country music, sang jazz-influenced torch songs long before it became hipster territory, then evolved into sultry Southern R&B and Sheryl Crow–like pop. Major labels frequently frown on such protean proclivities; hence her new album, Tears, Lies, and Alibis, is on her own label, Everso. Lynne wrote and produced classic pop, jazz, gospel, R&B, and country for Tears. She is virtually a style unto herself, an American original.
