Coming to America Near You

Wednesday, Jan 1 2014

Gary Shteyngart is a critical darling: His first three books, The Russian Debutante's Handbook, Absurdistan, and Super Sad True Love Story (besides all having amazing titles) have each been highly praised, and he was named one of The New Yorker magazine's "20 Under 40" fiction writers. Michiko Kakutani, writing in The New York Times, called Shteyngart "one of his generation's most original and exhilarating writers." His new memoir, Little Failure, is an epic but intimate account of the immigrant experience (Shteyngart was born in Leningrad in 1972 and moved to America at the age of 7). The book is a quintessential blend of satire and humorous self-deprecation. For example: newly arrived, long-impoverished, and ecstatic to have won the Publisher's Clearing House, his family argues among themselves about whether the prize has to come with the German-made Mercedes featured in the "award" letter. Premium tickets, at $45, include a copy of the book.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
