Club preview: Mux Mool

Wednesday, Jul 7 2010

In its 11-year existence, Michigan's Ghostly International imprint has grown from a nerdy, boutique techno label into a mature company whose roster includes guitar bands, drone artists, and other abstract dancefloor composers. The label values beautifully designed cover art, while the artists it signs are equally gorgeous and surreal. The Ghostly Live A/V Showcase features a genius quintet of up-and-coming electronic musicians who explore dreamy landscapes. Performing are Mux Mool (the stage name of Minnesota post-hip-hop beatmaker Brian Lindgren) and Seattle's the Sight Below, whose E Bowed guitar loops sound like the Cocteau Twins' blissful dirges filtered through minimalist techno. S.F.'s own Scott Hansen performs fuzzy IDM as Tycho, while Detroit's Shigeto works in melodic downtempo. Luckily for us, these are friendly ghosts.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
