Club preview: DJ Icey

After almost two decades, Orlando's DJ Icey (born Eddie Pappa) is still a gainfully employed DJ spreading the funky breakbeat gospel on dancefloors across America and running the Zone record label, established in 1993. That's an insane rarity in the world of electronic dance music, where genres and flavors come and go with the flick of a digitally controlled slab of vinyl. If his most recent mix CD, Disco Rodeo, is any indication, expect big, chunky basslines; uplifting power chords; and a steady metronome of beats when Icey hits Ruby Skye to DJ on Friday, June 18. The one thing he doesn't need? Why, that'd be more cowbell.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
