When Carey Perloff took over San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater in 1992, she brought a set of almost overwhelmingly new ideas. In her first season, Perloff received mixed reviews for her boundary-pushing selection of edgy rep. But Perloff wasn't just out to push people's buttons — 23 years later, it's clear that her knack for innovation has paid off. And the director is no stranger to creating her own work, as is evident by her collection of plays. In her new memoir, Beautiful Chaos: A Life in the Theater, Perloff gives readers a personal look at life backstage. From the somewhat rocky start of her A.C.T career, to the struggles she faced as a woman — and mother — in a male-dominated industry, Perloff touches on her daily challenges and how she faced each one head-on. In a discussion about the book with KQED's Michael Krasny at A.C.T.'s own Geary Theater, Perloff shares her experiences and (hopefully) gives some insight on how to be a badass boss.
American Conservatory Theater presents Beautiful Chaos: A Life in the Theater at 7 p.m. at the Geary Theater, 415 Geary St., S.F. Free; 749-2228 or act-sf.org.
