Bollywood Unplugged

Wednesday, Mar 19 2014

As seen with Bollywood greats Shah Rukh Khan, Shankar Mahadevan, and Shaan, on your television screen during the 2010 season of America's Got Talent, at Obama's 2013 Inaugural Ball, yearly at San Francisco's Ethnic Dance Festival, and at sundry NBA halftime shows, Mona Khan Company does Bollywood with unstoppable rhythmic energy and spirit on a grand scale, with dozens of dancers in elaborate costumes moving in mesmerizing, Busby Berkeley-style formations. However, for three performances, Mona Khan Company performs in SOMA's intimate, 50-seat Garage. Instead of its usual fare, the company takes the opportunity to present a quieter, more ruminative evening in Soch, a series of dances that combine rhythm, yoga, and text to examine the contradictions that characterize mortality: beauty and its destruction, love and loss, strength and vulnerability. For a company that's been everywhere, the show promises a blend of east and west that will leave you looking inward.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
