Bill Callahan's latest, Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle, splits the difference between his last record under his own name, Woke on a Whaleheart, and his albums as Smog. The songs are minimalist affairs comprising repetitive guitar lines accompanied by pianos, organs, and strings that foreground his candid (a)musings on life. On "Faith/Void," Callahan announces, "It's time to put God away" before serving up the line, "A void without a question is just perverse/Like tear gas misters at my grave." Sometimes could be viewed as a beautifully honest account of his breakup with singer and harpist Joanna Newsom, or just a beautifully honest breakout album.
